We are looking for an experienced Database Administrator / Engineer to help us support and evolve our current data landscape — while actively preparing for the future. Our existing stack is centered around Microsoft SQL Server, with dozens of active databases powering critical systems. We also use PostgreSQL, and MongoDB/MySQL are emerging on the horizon.
This role is essential as we move toward a modern architecture based on microservices, object storage (S3), lakehouse platforms, and AI/ML-enabled analytics. While deep cloud experience is welcome, our current focus is on solid engineering, automation, performance, replication, and resilience.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and optimize a large fleet of MS SQL Server instances, ensuring performance, availability, and security.
- Implement and manage replication, mirroring, and backup strategies.
- Collaborate with development, analytics, and infrastructure teams to deliver scalable data solutions.
- Support and tune PostgreSQL databases, with future involvement in MongoDB/MySQL deployments.
- Participate in architecture design for data services in a microservice environment.
- Help guide the company’s transition to cloud-native data architectures, including Data Lake / Lakehouse.
- Contribute to automation efforts (scripts, pipelines, provisioning, etc.).
- Monitor and troubleshoot production issues and perform root cause analysis (storage monitoring, network monitoring, sql profling etc.)
- Maintain and evolve database documentation, standards, and specifications with Confluence, draw.io, MD, etc.
Required Skills & Experience
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with database administration and engineering.
- Expert-level knowledge of MS SQL Server (2016 and later), including indexing, query tuning, procedures, replication/mirroring, AlwaysOn.
- Solid experience with PostgreSQL at the administration and development level.
- Strong understanding of database architecture, performance, and scalability best practices.
- Familiarity with cloud-native storage concepts (S3, object storage), and data lakes.
- Experience with ETL/ELT processes and data migrations.
- Working knowledge of CI/CD, Git-based workflows, and scripting.
- Effective collaboration and communication abilities.
- Clean and structured technical documentation habits.
- Language skills: Fluency in Azerbaijani, English (B2), Russian (B1).
Preferred / Nice to Have
- Familiarity with MySQL.
- Exposure to MongoDB, or other NoSQL/NewSQL platforms/technologies.
- Experience with Azure SQL or cloud-based DB environments.
- Experience with AWS RDS, Aurora, DMS, or equivalent Azure services.
- Familiarity with BI tools — we’re currently migrating from QlikView to Qlik Sense, with Power BI (and possibly Tableau) on the roadmap.
- Experience supporting data needs in insurance, finance, or other regulated domains.
- Participation in cloud/data modernization projects (e.g. building lakehouses, integrating with AI/ML pipelines).
Why Join Us?
- We’re a leading insurance company undergoing a full-scale digital transformation. Our systems are rapidly evolving — from legacy to microservices, from rigid DBs to flexible, cloud-ready architectures. You’ll be at the heart of that shift. You’ll get to shape things, not just maintain them. You’ll join a small, agile team that values clean code, practical solutions, and meaningful impact.
