Working Pattern: Employee Fixed Term Contract / Full Time 

As the Principal Structural Designer, you will:

  • Represent PD&MS with Clients, Suppliers / Vendors and Certifying Authorities in a professional manner;
  • Supervise personnel under the Principal Designer’s control, and the quality of work produced by them;
  • Assure competence of design personnel under the Principal Designer’s control. Identify personnel shortfalls and submit proposal to the Design Team Leader for solutions such as training, coaching or replacement;
  • Identify design scope of work required to undertake a project/job. Estimate deliverables time required to execute the scope of work;
  • Provide input to project plans and schedules via the Lead Engineer;
  • Identify early to the Lead Engineer / Lead Design areas of concern during the course of any project or study with necessary corrective action identified;
  • Ensure operational and maintenance issues are addressed in the design. Seek input from operations and maintenance personnel;
  • Carry out surveys, both onshore and offshore, to determine information to allow execution of works copes;
  • Monitor progress of work under the Principal Designer’s control and achieve completion within the agreed schedule and budget;
  • Plan resources forward and identify changes to resource requirements in a timely manner to the Lead Engineer / Design Team Leader;
  • Check department design deliverables;
  • Identify increase or reduction in scope of work and advise the Lead Engineer / Project Engineer accordingly;
  • Ensure Designers under the Principal Designers control follow procedures for document control and use and retention of check prints / IDC comments prints;
  • Comply with quality assurance, health and safety and environmental policies;
  • Demonstrate and promote PD&MS QHSE principles;
  • Ensure unsafe activities are challenged;
  • Adhere to the requirements of the best practice standards recommendations and processes in the undertaking of duties, in particular, risk assessment and control, reliability and failure prevention necessary to ensure the safe design, equipment and systems;
  • Demonstrate and promote PD&MS values;
  • Ensure direct report performance reviews are carried out within the required timescales (where applicable).

You’ll have experience of:

  • Leading a team of engineers and coordinating work tasks to achieve required plan dates or being a senior / principal designer looking for a step up in their career;
  • Managing design team budgets, producing scope estimates and recognising and controlling scope change;
  • Delivering primary and secondary structural designs, lifting arrangements and development of installation routes;
  • Working in offshore and onshore oil & gas business;
  • Producing and checking design deliverables that conform to all applicable industry engineering codes and standards as well as the client’s policies and procedures relative to the equipment being specified. Sound knowledge of relevant commonly used codes therefore required;
  • Producing and design checking structural detail drawings, checking installation sequence drawings, lifting arrangement drawings and weight control reports;
  • Generating and checking design 3D models using Plant 3D;
  • Using Microsoft packages, AutoCAD, Navisworks and Plant 3D essential.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant subject or equivalent;
  • Previous demonstrable experience in detailed design and design checking;
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant oil and gas industry codes and standards;
  • Understanding of all engineering disciplines;
  • Highly competent in the use of Autodesk design products;
  • Experienced in managing and developing others;
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
